Are supplements on the keto diet necessary?
The question about taking supplements on the keto diet remains a highly debatable subject. It’s easy to say yes and then move on, but I’m not going to do that. I find the answer is complex and is worthy of attention.
Whether or not you take supplements on the keto diet needs to be determined individually. In my view, the decision to take supplements is directly related to how your body responds to ketosis. Because, every person’s story is unique.
Why I Take Supplements on Keto
I take supplements on keto because my body, in its own subtle way (or sometimes not so subtle way), has made it clear I need them.
For instance, when I first started the keto diet, I had stomach issues. As a result, I did a lot of research in those early days trying to figure out why. What I discovered was that having my gallbladder removed years earlier, was the culprit. Consequently, I have a hard time processing fat. On a keto diet where fat is our mainstay, this is not a good thing. Fortunately, I discovered ox-bile and started supplementing with it while my body adjusted to keto and a higher fat intake. I am happy to say; the issue has been resolved.
Eat a well balanced diet
I recommend that those on a keto diet strive to eat a well balanced diet with plenty of good fats, protein and healthy low carb veggies. However, even with a proper keto diet you may still be lacking the vital nutrients and vitamins your body needs to function properly.
