What is a Keto Diet?
A keto diet is a high fat, low carbohydrate, moderate protein diet.
The main objective on this type of diet is to eat foods that trigger your body to move into Ketosis.
When you are in Ketosis your body will burn fat for energy instead of carbohydrates.
Ketosis is a normal metabolic state in which your body uses fat for energy instead of carbohydrates. When carbohydrates are not readily available, the liver breaks down fat instead and produces ketones. The ketones are then released into your blood stream where they are utilized for energy.
It’s important to note that ketosis can occur naturally. For example, after extensive exercise, when fasting, during pregnancy and in those with uncontrolled diabetes. As you can see, our bodies do a great job of adapting naturally to what we need at the moment.
Macros on The Keto Diet
At this point, we have explained what a keto diet is and have defined ketosis. Hopefully, you also went a little deeper and discovered the role carbohydrates and insulin play in making us fat. So, let’s keep going and learn what macros are and why they are important to our understanding of the ketogenic diet.
To begin with, the term macro is an abbreviation for the word macronutrient. You eat macronutrients every day in the form of fats, proteins and carbohydrates. Once digested, macronutrients create the building blocks our body uses to produce energy.
Each macro, whether fat, protein or carbohydrate, plays an essential role in keeping our bodies running smoothly.

How Do I Get into Ketosis?
In order to reach ketosis, you must aggressively decrease the amount of carbohydrate building blocks available to your body for energy. At the same time, you need to increase the amount of fat building blocks available. The manipulation of building blocks triggers your body to use fat for energy.
Figuring Your Macros on a Keto Diet
The percentage of the macros needed to maintain ketosis vary slightly from person to person. A good starting point is to eat 75% of your daily calories from fat, 15 – 20% of your calories from protein and 5 -10% from carbohydrates.
If you want a more precise way to figure out your macro percentages use the Keto Foodification Macro Calculator. To use, simply fill in your specific parameters and the goals you are trying to achieve. The KF calculator will do the rest.
